COMPUTER networks have been used for years by public health officials to monitor outbreaks of disease. Typically, the networks compile a database of reports about sick patients from doctors or other health care workers and look for patterns of illness or symptoms. But the reporting and compiling can take a day or more, delaying detection of an outbreak.
